Don't Plant Strawberries in the Ground!
I wish someone had told me that two years ago when I made the grave mistake of planting two adorable little strawberry plants in my garden. Don't get me wrong, I am glad that I planted them and last year I enjoyed all of the fresh strawberries. So did the many others I shared with, because, you see, Strawberries spread like WEEDS!!
I started with two small 2 inch plants and now I have found strawberries in my lawn, 5 feet away from my garden. Also, the leaves stayed green all winter, which I didn't know would happen.
Starting this year, I am trying to propagate the plants in pots and I have already cut back about a foot of the garden. Last year, I also learned that basil tends to self propagate and my tomatoes (haven't planted in 4 years) continue to keep popping up. I was hoping to save some room for other things in the garden this season, but the strawberries have invaded everywhere.
I think the most surprising thing is that they took root on top of the marble gravel I used between the garden and the fence. There is black plastic under that gravel and nothing has grown in between the garden and the fence since I dug and built the garden 4 years ago, but strawberries apparently can survive on just rocks.
So be careful with strawberries in your garden because they can quickly become your whole garden. What surprised you in your garden? Share in the comments below.

It is hard to see the stone underneath these rogue strawberries, but they took over there too. |
